The village of Ħal Tarxien is situated in the southern part of Malta and is considered as one of the ancient habitable villages.  The name ‘Tarxien’ is derived from the word ‘tirxa’ which means ‘a rock’.  This village have been in existance since 4000 years ago and according to archeologists the Neolithic Temples were used as sacred place where the inhabitants worshipped the “Woman of Fertility”.  Ħal Tarxien is known as the place where excavations of historical sites are carried out.

The present population has reached about 9000.  Till the year 1960 the residents earned their living primarily from agriculture, especially selling goats’ milk.  Nowadays this is past history and a very few work in agriculture as their daily earnings.
